What changed
On June 2, OpenAI announced role-specific plugins, shareable Sites, and annotations for Codex. This pushes Codex beyond pure software engineering and toward a general-purpose workspace agent.
OpenAI says Codex now has more than 5 million weekly active users, with non-developers making up about 20% of users and growing more than 3x as fast as developers (product post, usage report summary).
The product angle
The first wave of plugins targets concrete job functions instead of generic prompting. OpenAI says the launch includes plugins for data analytics, creative production, sales, product design, public equity investing, and investment banking. For product teams, the standout is the product design plugin, which can explore directions, audit flows, prototype from a live URL, and turn screenshots into interactive concepts.
Sites are the more strategic feature. OpenAI describes them as shareable internal web apps and dashboards that Codex can generate from plans, notes, models, or launch materials, then keep updated over time. They are rolling out in preview for Business and Enterprise teams through the Codex app.
Why it matters
This looks like a real shift in where AI tooling is heading. Instead of stopping at code generation, Codex is being positioned to produce artifacts the rest of the team can actually use: prototypes, dashboards, review hubs, reports, and presentations.
Annotations also matter. OpenAI says the same point-and-edit workflow developers use on generated code now extends to documents, spreadsheets, slides, and sites. That makes Codex more useful during revision, which is where a lot of real product work actually happens.
What builders should watch
If this rollout lands well, Codex starts competing less with narrow coding assistants and more with lightweight internal-tool builders, workflow software, and prototype tools. For portfolio builders and small teams, the practical takeaway is that AI products are moving from chat helpers to artifact generators that can be reviewed and shared across functions.
